WHAT IS A WIND MITIGATION INSPECTION?

Here is another question I get asked a lot.  I like Wind Mitigations because they help customers save money.  The wind mitigation looks at seven features of the home and how they will respond during a “wind” event such as a hurricane.  These areas are as follows:  The year and building code of the structure; The type and age of roof covering; How the roof decking material (such as Plywood) is attached to the roof structure; How the roof structure is attached to the building; The shape of the roof; If a proper second means of water resistance has been applied to the roof deck; Type of protection (if any) is provided for openings to the structure such as doors and windows.

The state of Florida has narrowed the form to these seven features that it believes are most affective in resisting damage from the storms we are prone to. Some insurance companies would prefer you don’t even know about this form. In fact, Florida Law (FL 627.0629) was implemented by the state requiring insurers to offer discounts, credits, rate differentials or reduced deductibles based on the information in this form. Some will even tell you not to bother because of the age of the home. If there are any doubts, contact me and we can briefly discuss this over the phone to evaluate if this inspection is right for you. One thing I can guarantee is that you will save money equal to or above the cost of the Wind Mitigation inspection for the first year of your insurance premium. If you don’t, I will gladly return the difference. I have heard savings for this discount anywhere from $200 to $1200.
